Luis Severino, who had been with the New York Yankees since 2015, will move across town in 2024.
Since dominating the American League in 2017 (2.98 ERA) and in 2018 (3.39 ERA), injuries and ineffectiveness affected him and allowed him to complete only one decent season, in 2022 (3.18 ERA in 102 frames).
Severino was a disaster in 2023, though, with a 6.65 ERA in 89.1 innings, ranking as one of the worst starters in MLB.
His four-year, $40 million contract with an option just expired, and he became a free agent.
He wasn’t on the market for long, as the New York Mets are snagging him on a one-year deal.
Severino, still not 30 years old, is still theoretically in his prime.
If the Mets are patient with him and can help him stay healthy and improve his command and trust in his pitches, it’s not hard to see him bounce back.
He will be part of a select group of pitchers who wore the uniforms of both New York teams.
“A list Luis Severino could join in ’24: at least 125 career IP with both Mets & Yankees: David Cone, Orlando Hernández, Dwight Gooden, Mike Torrez, Neil Allen, Al Leiter, Bartolo Colon. If we lower it to at least 100 IP w/each, add: Mike Stanton, Dale Murray, Rob Gardner, Chris Capuano,” Sarah Langs, a stats specialist, tweeted.

If he is healthy, Severino will clear 100 innings with the Mets.
150 could be a more aggressive threshold, but it’s still possible.
He could join a list of really talented names if he clears both numbers.
Hopefully, his health allows fans to watch and enjoy one of the most talented pitchers the league saw in the second half of the 2010s.
