American soccer legend Megan Rapinoe was forced to leave her final career game with an injury Saturday night.
Rapinoe was competing with the OL Reign against Gotham City FC in the NWSL Final when she appeared to injure her knee on a non-contact play. Rapinoe had to be helped off the field and into the locker room with two trainers under her arm.
Rapinoe, 38, announced in early July — ahead of the World Cup — that she would be retiring after this NWSL season. She is a two-time World Cup champion and earned the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her advocacy in a number of areas, including for the 2SLGBTQ+ community.
“I’ve been able to have such an incredible career, and this game has brought me all over the world and allowed me to meet so many amazing people,” Rapinoe said in a news release when announcing her retirement. “To be able to play one last World Cup and one last NWSL season and go out on my own terms is incredibly special.”
