The NRL off-season transfer action has kicked off with perhaps the most unsurprising move of the year, with Kyle Flanagan officially joining his father Shane at the Dragons.
Shane is yet to take over as the players are on holiday, but is already making moves behind the scenes, with the long-expected arrival of Kyle the first of his manouevers.
While much has been made of the familial connection, Kyle’s reinvention as a hooker in the latter part of his Bulldogs career does offer versatility to the Dragons, especially given the midseason departure of Moses Mbye to the Super League.
With Jayden Sullivan also leaving the club, Flanagan can offer depth in the halves as well as at dummy half. Sullivan has left St George Illawarra to join the Wests Tigers from next year.
Flanagan debuted under his father at Cronulla, but has been through the Roosters and latterly the Dogs en route to reuniting at the Dragons. They will be the third father/son duo in the NRL, joining Ivan and Nathan Cleary and Kevin and Billy Walters.
“Kyle brings great value to our squad in a number of positions,” said Ben Haran, Dragons General Manager of Football.
“His competitive nature, experience and knowledge of the game will benefit those around him. We look forward to him joining the club in November.”
The Titans have made Tino Fa’asuamaleaui the best paid player in rugby league history with a huge $12m deal that will see him remain on the Gold Coast for the next decade.
No player has ever had so much confirmed cash, with the Titaans apeing the deal that the Cowboys tabled to Jason Taumalolo way back in 2017, which was worth $10m over ten years.
David Fifita has also extended at the club, with his contract thought to be worth $3m over four years, confirming that he will stay at the club through until 2027.
Both Fifita and Fa’asuamaleaui had opt-outs in their contracts if Justin Holbrook was sacked, and had explored their options when the coach left mid-year.
Now, the two will stay with the club through their prime years.
“We’re thrilled that both Tino and David have re-affirmed their commitment to the club.” said CEO Steve Mitchell.
“These are two great young men, talented footballers and important players for us as we work towards our goal of bringing premierships to the Coast.
“Both Tino and David have already made an impact in their time here and as a club, we’re excited to see what they can achieve in our jersey over the coming years.”
Brisbane have tabled a one-year contract extension to winger Corey Oates and coach Kevin Walters says he hopes the club stalwart will continue his NRL career at the club.
In his original one-year deal, signed at the end of 2022, the 28-year-old had a player option in his favour that he could take up for next year and another one for 2025, that he could activate next season but his management rescinded the option for 2024.
The two parties are now in negotiations for a one-year extension in 2024, which is for less than his salary this season but more than the amount previously agreed for with the option.
“We have made a contract offer to Oatesy,” Walters said on Thursday. “He’s been really good for us and particularly the last couple of years. He has fought back from some dark places which I am really proud of Oatesy for doing.
“We want him at the club and we certainly want to make sure he is here next year playing for the Broncos.”
The Broncos have a juggling act to perform with their salary cap. They are working through the Payne Haas contract and have a suite of other players off-contract at the end of 2024.
They include second-rowers Kurt Capewell, Jordan Riki and Brendan Piakura, five-eighth Ezra Mam and hooker Billy Walters.
Former Roosters prop Siosiua Taukeiaho will return to the NRL after being granted a release by Catalans at the end of the Super League season. He is set to join Canterbury but the club is yet to announce the deal.
Ex-Cowboys playmaker Jake Clifford is returning to the club next season after stints at Newcastle and the Super League, Titans prop Thomas Mikaele has headed off to Warrington while the Knights have signed Panthers half Jack Cogger and Rabbitohs forward Jed Cartwright for next year and re-signed Enari Tuala and Dylan Lucas until the end of 2025.
