After making her way through a range of programmes – which included Homes under the Hammer, Marriage or Mortgage and A Place in the Sun – she came to the conclusion that one show paved the way for all its successors.
Location, Location, Location has now been airing for 25 years on Channel 4, and Jane thinks it cracked the code for drawing viewers in.
The property show follows Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer as they help Brits find their dream house.
It was recently brought back for a 40th series, having consistently received good ratings despite how long the programme has been airing for.
According to the author, the appeal lies in the way it focuses on regular people.
Viewers can put themselves in the shoes of the couples who are property hunting, which makes for better telly.
She also pointed out that it allows nosy Brits a chance to see what the interior decor looks like in other homes around the nation.
Jane added: “The avocado bathroom suites are still out there along with the swirly carpets and ceilings, the fake leather sofas and perfectly British nick nacks.”
Recent episodes saw two young families searching the idyllic coast of Devon for their new home.
Natalie and Glen wanted a more affordable property after being priced out of their current market while single mum Amy dreamed of living by the sea with her two young children.
