Coco Gauff had her doubles partner Jess Pegula in stitches after celebrating victory a game too early.
After firing a stinger back across the court to win the game, Gauff went in for a hug with Pegula who was only motioning for a handshake.
Gauff, it seemed, thought the match was over before Pegula appeared to say “the match is still going” at which point her 19-year-old teammate gasped at the realisation.
Indeed, the pair were one game short of victory and had to serve out shortly thereafter.
The pair shared a laugh, Gauff seen saying “I thought it was over” before resuming the match.
“Oh I thought the match was over,” said Gauff after the incident.
“I hit a great return and I went for a hug and Jess was like going away from me and I was like ‘Damn. Like what did I do?’
“Then I realised the match wasn’t over.
“She’s like, ‘What’s the score?’ and I was like ‘Oh!’ There was no game, set, match.
“That was me, my mess up. We were playing so good so I thought it was over.”
Gauff and Pegula are slated to face Cristina Bucsa of Spain and Russia’s Alexandra Panova in the second round of the women’s doubles draw.
