When is the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT release date? The arrival of the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT looks to be close at hand, potentially plugging the midrange gap in team red’s current generation graphics card lineup. While it shouldn’t be the most powerful RDNA 3 pixel pusher, it will hopefully offer a great balance of value and performance to remain compelling. As its launch approaches, we’re here to share all the latest details and rumors on the upcoming GPU.
Taking its place behind its more powerful siblings like the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX, the RX 7800 XT will cater less to the ultra-enthusiast and instead aim to be the best graphics card in its price bracket.
Going up against the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4000 series, the most direct competition for the RX 7800 XT will likely be the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070. Meanwhile, the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT will continue to hold its own against the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Ti.
With the AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT potentially entering the fray too, likely to combat the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Ti, the GPU space is about to get a lot more crowded. So, to help you prepare for team red’s next graphics card announcement, here’s everything we know about the company’s midrange marvel.
When is the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT release date?
We expect the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT release date to arrive in September 2023. The graphics card’s reveal is rumored to take place at Gamescom 2023, between August 23-27, providing an announcement gap that’s typical of previous AMD launches.
During an earnings call earlier this year, AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su confirmed plans to launch new “enthusiast” Radeon GPUs during the third quarter of this year, making August and September the only eligible months left. Now, more recently, AMD’s senior vice president & general manager of Radeon, Scott Herkelman confirmed the company will make its “next major product announcements” at Gamescom.
If we look at the previous Radeon RX 600 series launch, all XT variants arrived with their vanilla counterparts, so we may see other pixel pushers join the party too. Of course, this is still yet to be confirmed, as the release date for prospective cards, and even what they’re called, is subject to change until AMD’s eventual official announcement.
AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT price speculation
The AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT price is likely to be $600-$650, with an official cost expected closer to launch. This figure is based on previous and current generation pricing trends, as well as competitor MSRPs.
Back in 2020, the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT arrived on the scene with a $649 price, and it’s entirely possible that AMD will stick with that figure for the RX 7800 XT. However, this would harm its value versus the RTX 4070, so we believe AMD will opt for a generational drop in cost as it has with other RX 7000 series graphics cards, including the AMD Radeon RX 7600.
If we take the rumored AMD Radeon RX 7800 price into account, which suggests the GPU will cost $549 ($30 less than the RX 6800), then the RX 7800 XT may be priced at $619.
AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT specs rumors
The AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT specs are rumored to include improvements to boost clocks, while also sporting 16GB of VRAM on a 256-bit memory bus. Strangely, though, it may feature less stream processors than its predecessor.
According to an AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT specs leak, the Navi 32 GPU will enjoy 16GB GDDR6 VRAM and a 256-bit memory bus. Further potential details on the GPU’s technical makeup also arrived courtesy of a mistakenly published PowerColor listing that was promptly pulled, including a 2.5GHz boost clock speed and 3,840 stream processors.
Here are the rumored AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT specs:
GPU | Navi 32 |
Stream processors | 3,840 |
Compute Units | 60 |
Ray accelerators | 60 |
Game clock | 2,210MHz |
Boost clock | 2,520MHz |
VRAM | 16GB GDDR6 |
Bus width | 256-bit |
TDP | TBC |
We don’t yet know the RX 7800 XT’s power draw, but can make a guess at the ballpark figures. The TDP is likely to fall somewhere between the RX 7900 XT’s 315W and the RX 7600’s 165W. The RX 6800 XT was rated at 300W maximum draw, so we’re likely to see its RDNA 3 successor fall somewhere around that number.
AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT benchmark estimations
AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT benchmark estimations suggest the GPU may offer a 10-15% generational performance improvement.
In lieu of official RX 7800 XT frame rate data, Igor’s Lab used the Radeon Pro W7800 with half its VRAM occupied to simulate how the RX 7800 XT might perform when it does arrive. The results weren’t exactly ground-breaking, with the simulated card performing a mere 10-15% better than its RX 6800 XT predecessor. This shouldn’t be taken as gospel, though, as it doesn’t necessarily match what the RX 7800 XT is really capable of.
Of course, AMD is also brewing up a revamped version of FidelityFX Super Resolution, and the AMD FSR 3 release date may coincide with Starfield on September 6. Just like Nvidia DLSS Frame Generation, the new Radeon upscaler will use ‘Fluid Motion Frame’ tech to create entirely new frame rates while preserving fidelity.
Our Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 review outlines just how useful an AI upscaler and frame generation is to a graphics card’s value. Without FSR 3, the RX 7800 XT will probably struggle to keep up with its Lovelace rival, much as its raw rasteriziation performance should be comparable.
